September is Preparedness Month
(MADISON) – The recent bomb explosions in New York and New Jersey, along with a knife attack at a mall in St. Cloud, Minnesota remind us all to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement. As part of September Preparedness Month in Wisconsin, Governor Scott Walker, along with law enforcement across the state continue to promote the “If You See Something, Say Something TM” campaign.
“We all have a role in keeping our communities, our state and our nation safe. When you see something that just doesn’t seem right or someone acting suspicious, that is the time to take action and contact local authorities,” said Major General Don Dunbar, Adjutant General and Wisconsin’s Homeland Security Advisor.
The “If You See Something, Say Something TM” campaign is a national public safety awareness action based on the premise that concerned citizens reporting unusual activity are among the most effective means of preventing criminal or terrorist acts. Suspicious activity could be a variety of behaviors or items including:
* Unusual items or situations: A vehicle is parked in an odd location, a package/luggage is left unattended, a window/door is open that is usually closed, or other out-of-the-ordinary situations occur.
* Eliciting information: A person questions individuals at a level beyond curiosity about a building’s purpose, operations, security procedures and/or personnel, shift changes, etc.
* Observation/surveillance: Someone pays unusual attention to facilities or buildings beyond a casual or professional interest.
If someone sees something suspicious, they should contact local law enforcement. If it is an emergency, dial 9-1-1. If it is not an emergency, please contact the local non-emergency law enforcement number or 1-877-WIWATCH.
